How to avoid burnout?

In preventing burnout, self-care is crucial. We must pay attention to the symptoms leading to burnout, become aware of them, avoid them, and change our behaviors. It is essential to know how to distance yourself from excessive work, to relax and rest, and to recharge with fresh physical and mental energy.

How to Avoid Burnout

1. Digital Detox
Constant availability through email and mobile phones prevents relaxation and rest. Working 24/7 exposes us to constant stressors and tension. If a complete digital disconnect is not possible over the weekend, set specific times to check for new messages, such as late Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Avoid work obligations in between.

2. Pay Attention to Physical Signals
Headaches might signal dehydration, stomachaches could indicate hunger, and neck pain may result from awkward sleeping positions. However, these symptoms can also be accumulated signs of stress or anxiety. Our body is constantly "communicating," but we rarely "listen."

3. Time for Breaks and Rest
Just as we schedule work time, we should also plan for rest. Scheduling has a dual benefit: it helps us actually take breaks and fosters a pleasant anticipation. Psychologists recommend taking a 15-minute break for every hour and a half of work. Working until we "drop" is less effective than taking regular short breaks.

4. Importance of Sleep
Quality sleep has a significant impact on our health. If you have trouble sleeping, check your sleep hygiene. Consider improving factors like room temperature, lighting, and turning off electronic devices. Maintain a consistent bedtime, and use relaxing practices like warm drinks or baths to aid sleep.

5. Organization of Tasks
Much stress and frustration stem from poor organization of the day and tasks. If you struggle with this, seek help from someone who is highly organized and effective. Ask them to show you how they organize their day. Dividing tasks into urgent and non-urgent, important and less important categories can lead to better organization.

6. Support from Important Others
If you find that you cannot manage all the work alone, ask for help. Avoid the mindset of being indispensable and doing everything yourself. Invest in good relationships with family and loved ones. Spend time with those close to you, as they will support you during difficult times. Ensure that your time and energy are invested in meaningful work and relationships that align with your life goals.
