Internet Addiction

Most people first think of addictions to alcohol, tobacco or drugs when they hear the word "addiction". We also frequently hear about addictions to shopping, gambling, relationships or computer games. Recently, however, internet addiction has become increasingly prominent.

Some experts suggest that the internet can be even more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, as it is freely accessible and some individuals are constantly connected, living in a virtual reality. In doing so, they may neglect social interactions, work, and even hygiene and nutrition. Internet addiction can be fatal. If an addict is cut off from internet access, they may experience psychological stress and withdrawal symptoms, such as muscle tremors, unusual behavior, obsessive thoughts, and so on.

The internet can also be considered as digital heroin.

Types of Internet Addiction

There are several forms of internet addiction, the most common of which include addiction to gambling, computer games, online sex and pornography, and social media.

Population Groups More Prone to Addiction

Adolescents and older adults are believed to be more susceptible to internet addiction. Genetics, family, and social environment also play significant roles.

Recognizing Addiction Problems

Problems in individuals addicted to the internet can be identified by:
- An inability to stop "being connected to the web,"
- Significant emotional fluctuations,
- Neglect of social interactions, and
- Very little time dedicated to work and leisure activities.

Treatment of Addiction

Whether the addiction is to cocaine, alcohol, or the internet, the key issue is the need for intoxication, withdrawal, and disconnection. All addictions are quite similar in this respect and require treatment.
